Supermoon 2013: Will Largo Skies Cooperate?
That's the question as the local forecast calls for a decent chance of storms Saturday night.
This article was written by Megan VerHelst with a contribution from Sherri Lonon.
The answer is possibly not, but with any luck the clouds will clear long enough for you to check it out. The weather forecast for the Largo area calls for a 20 percent chance of storms overnight June 22, when the moon will appear super large and super close to Earth.
On June 22-23, the moon is at perigee — its closest approach to Earth, according to Astronomy magazine's website. The moon will be just 221,824 miles away from us.
So what's the best time to see this Supermoon? EarthSky says the moon will officially be full at 6:32 a.m. CDT Sunday. The actual perigee takes place about 20 minutes prior, according to Astronomy.
Don't want to get up at 6:32 a.m. to see the supermoon? The moon will look just about as full the evening of June 22, according to Astronomy, and it'll be full the evening of June 23.
EarthSky says this is the closest the moon will be to Earth until Aug. 10, 2014.
Happy sky watching!
