2 Injured Following Small Plane Crash In Lutz Friday

TAMPA, FL — It proved to be a tough day for pilots of small-engine planes in Tampa Friday.

Two people were taken to the hospital after a plane crash near the Tampa North Aero Park, 4241 Birdsong Blvd., Lutz. The crash occurred along Birdsong Boulevard.

Two people were hospitalized for injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

Officials at Tampa International Airport said a Cessna Citation out of Arkansas was at 27,000 feet near St. Petersburg when the pilot lost the left winglet and part of the wing, according to a report from WFLA Channel 8 TV. The station's helicopter, Eagle 8, happened to be flying nearby at the time and captured footage of the jet landing.
