Everything started for me with a simpleΒ yes. One simpleΒ yesΒ propelled my career from anΒ AssistantΒ Director at Safe Schools South Florida, toΒ CityΒ Commissioner andΒ Vice-Mayor, toΒ today,Β theΒ Director ofΒ TalentΒ Operations at Jackson Health System.

IΒ first saidΒ yesΒ when I started Miami Dade College.Β I benefited from affordable courses, flexible schedules andΒ the ability to connect with the community.Β ButΒ MDCΒ alsoΒ trained meΒ to thinkΒ strategically and collectively – two skills needed for the next phase of my career.

In 2012, I was electedΒ CityΒ Commissioner andΒ Vice-Mayor for theΒ city of Aventura.Β Growing up in theΒ areaΒ since the age of 12, I witnessed the demographicΒ slowlyΒ shift from retirement-aged residents toΒ younger adults. When I was 21, I was determined to find a way for both groups to find valueΒ in Aventura. That’s when I decided to run for office. That’sΒ alsoΒ how I became the youngest, openly gay, elected woman in our country (at the time). Imagine,Β a young, openly gay woman walking into a conservative communityΒ saying she wantedΒ to shake things up a bit? I did just that. And we were still able to maintain a low tax rate while attracting great new business that appealed to a younger crowd.

Today, I am still living off a simpleΒ yes. SayingΒ yesΒ hasΒ taken meΒ onΒ aΒ journey ofΒ self-discovery. On that road,Β IΒ foundΒ aΒ senseΒ of responsibility to help others succeed.Β It has become my life’s work and why I’ve dedicated my career to serving my community.
