Online Tool Helps Floridians Avoid Charity Scams

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services offers advice for avoiding charity scams this holiday season.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — As the season of giving fast approaches, scammers are gearing up to part generous people from their money. Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam wants to help stop the bad guys in their tracks by arming residents with information they can use to avoid getting scammed.

“During the holiday season, many generous Floridians contribute their hard-earned money to support important causes,” Putnam said. “Before giving, I encourage you to do your homework and make the most of your donation.”

Putnam’s Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has made it fairly easy for Sunshine State residents to do that homework he’s talking about. The agency offers a Check-A-Charity tool online that lets residents view charity financial information and current registration status. Residents may also call 1-800-HELP-FLA to gain information.

When approached by representatives from charitable organizations in person or on the phone, Putnam also suggests asking how the donations will be spent. He stresses that telephone callers may be paid solicitors and not volunteers.

In regard to that scammers, Putnam said it’s important to watch out for organizations that may use names that are similar to well-known charities. Using the Check-A-Charity tool can help prevent falling into this potential pitfall. Keeping printed receipts of donations is also important for avoiding scams and collecting any tax benefits that may result.

To protect residents, the state of Florida does require all charities to register with the department of agriculture. The only exceptions are religious, educational, political and governmental agencies. In addition, if a professional solicitor is working on behalf of a charity, that person must also register with the department and should be able to provide their registration number, Putnam said.
