Sinkhole Still Causing Traffic Problems at Fletcher/Nebraska

The  that closed much of the intersection at Fletcher and Nebraska avenues Monday will not be repaired in time for rush hour traffic this evening.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, workers are in the process of repairing the sinkhole by filling it with grout.

“At this time, we are estimating this area will NOT be reopened for evening rush hour,” FDOT said in an emailed statement to the press. “Please advise motorists to take alternate routes.”

The intersection was first closed off Monday as workers tried to repair the sinkhole, which the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office described as approximately six feet in diameter and eight feet deep.

Patch reader Jamie Robe, a Temple Terrace resident, said he had trouble getting around the intersection on his way to Lutz Tuesday morning. He said one northbound lane on Nebraska was moving through, but none south. He described Fletcher Avenue as “hopeless” around the intersection, and he said Bearss Avenue and Interstate 275 were backed up.

“If you are going North, say to Lutz, I suggest actually staying on Nebraska, as the one lane North gets thru the light at Fletcher,” he wrote in a comment on our original sinkhole story.

Robe said if motorists get on I-275 at Busch Boulevard heading north, they’ll likely have problems getting off at Fowler or Bearss avenues. If they are traveling south, he suggested getting on I-275 at Bearss and exiting at Busch or points further south.
