Here are the top five stories in Orlando today:
1. The Service Trades Council Union, which represents about 41,000 Disney workers, is back at the bargaining table to negotiate a new contract with Disney amid a rising cost of living in the Orlando area. The last contract raised worker pay to $15 an hour, but now workers are saying that is not enough with monthly rent rising by hundreds of dollars a month for many. (Florida Politics)
2. Universal Orlando has now implemented a weekend curfew for guests under age 18 at CityWalk. The curfew comes weeks after an altercation in the parking garage led to an evacuation at the popular tourist attraction. (Click Orlando)
3. Quay Australia, Mango, Fat Tuesday and Tapville Social are coming to The Florida Mall in Orlando this fall. The mall is seeing a resurgence in demand for retail space since the pandemic has eased. (Subscription: Orlando Business Journal)
4. Leesburg police are investigating the death of 37-year-old Melissa Smith in the 1200 block of Penn Street Monday morning. Police found Smith lying on the ground of a laundry room, deceased from a gunshot wound, when they arrived at the scene. (WFTV, Click Orlando)
5. Orange County leaders will meet today to propose a rent control cap amid an affordable housing crisis. If the leaders approve, the issue will go to voters on a November ballot. A similar measure died across I-4 last week when landlords pushed back against rent control. If approved, the rent increase would be tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which is currently 9.1%.
