Felon Told Deputies He Used Gun to Shoot His Sick Dog

Deputies say convicted felon Andrew William Channell, 52, of Palm Harbor, told them he knew he was not supposed to have a gun.

A Palm Harbor man who is a convicted felon is accused of being in possession of a firearm.

Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies were called to a report of shots fired at home on Cardinal Trail in Palm Harbor around 7:30 a.m. on June 14, 2013.

They say Andrew William Channell, 52, used a Hi-Point, 9MM handgun to shoot his sick dog and Channell knew he was not supposed to have a gun, according to an arrest affidavit.

Channell was convicted of felony dealing in stolen property in August 1996, which makes it illegal for him to have a gun in his possession.

Another convicted felon, Jerry Allen Carpenter, 32, of Clearwater, was also at the residence. Deputies say the gun that Channell used to shoot his dog belonged to Carpenter. The gun was hidden in a laundry basket at the home.

Channell was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on one count of felon in possession of a firearm and was released after posting a $10,000 bond.

Carpenter was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on one count of felon in possession of a firearm, one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of paraphernalia. He was released after posting $12,250 bond.

Deputies say they saw a dead dog in the back yard of the home. Charges were not filed against Channell in connection with the death of the dog.
