Local artist teaches glass art to her neighbors
Thalia Newton, 84, teaches mosaic glass art class at Watersound Fountains where she lives in Inlet Beach

Thalia Newton, 84, is a staple in the local artist community. She is a founding member of Okaloosa Public Arts (OPA) and ran a successful interior design business – Interiors by Thalia – for many years. Her art is also on display in Turkey Creek Park, where she and fellow artist Pam Folse collaborated on the Emerald Coast Heron in the park.
Earlier this month, Thalia shared her passion for the arts with her neighbors at Watersound Fountains, a senior living community in Inlet Beach where she lives. An accomplished mosaic glass artist, Thalia taught a class on how to create mosaic glass art with found objects. More than a dozen members of the community attended and created mosaic vases that will be used to create centerpieces during the flower arranging class held every Friday.
“We’re so grateful for members like Thalia who openly share their passions with our community,” said Melissa Adams, Executive Director of Watersound Fountains. “Her energy and skill undoubtedly motivate her fellow members and it’s been truly inspiring to witness her share her knowledge through this unique Watermark University class.”

Watermark University is an award-winning program unique to Watermark Retirement Communities, the top 10 senior housing operator that manages Watersound Fountains. Through Watermark University, members can attend and teach classes with topics ranging from watercolors and sculpture to foreign language and ballroom dancing. Each class is designed to stimulate members’ mind and help them discover new passions and rediscover old ones.
In her retirement, Thalia has found more time to explore her art. When she’s not busy working socializing with her neighbors, you can find her painting watercolors in the den of her two-bedroom apartment that she’s converted into art studio.
