Here are the top three stories in Panama City today:
- Officials in nearby Panama City Beach are proposing two new charter amendments for the Apr. 18 municipal ballot to streamline certain purchases by the IT department and obtain the best insurance rates by allowing competitive bidding for broker services. The first amendment would allow the city to buy security software without going through a bidding process, while the second amendment would allow the city to negotiate insurance rates with various companies to save money. The charter amendments will be put to a vote on election day. (WMBB - mypanhandle.com)
- The NCAA intercollegiate women's lacrosse tournament "SpringFling" is returning to Bay County after 20 years, and it will take place at the Publix Sports Park. The event, which is the longest-running NCAA tournament of its kind, started in Panama City in 1997 before moving to Palm Beach County. Twelve NCAA Division III women's lacrosse teams will participate in the event, which runs from now until Thursday, Mar. 16. (WMBB - mypanhandle.com)
- Eleven Bay High School students were honored with the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards from Cambridge Assessment International Education for their excellent results in the Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) program. The program aims to prepare students for college-level coursework and challenge their critical thinking and writing abilities. Students who pass the exams earn points towards the AICE diploma, which allows them to earn the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship that pays for their tuition in full for those who stay in Florida for college.
