Gratifying Grouper on the Beach

Where is the best place to indulge in some fresh seafood? We found a number of hot spots for grouper and picked our favorites.

Here's an Italian spin on a grouper dish: the Fried Grouper Alfredo at the Hurricane Restaurant. If you're looking for an energy packed combination of carbs and protein, try this plate for $24. Fresh grouper is cut into bite size piece, then it is lightly breaded and fried in rice bran oil. It is then served atop a heaping pile of bowtie pasta soaked in alfredo sauce and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. Garlic bread comes on the side as well.

For a simple, on-the-go grouper option, look no further than Sea Critters Cafe. Grouper nuggets are a local favorite, but the portions are usually unpredictable. Sea Critters serves up jumbo pieces of fresh grouper that are breaded and deep fried to perfection. The plate costs $8.99 and is served with lemon and tartar sauce. The grouper nuggets blend well with a salad or even as a starter for a full on meal.

Check out Middle Grounds Grill for an island-infused twist on grouper preparation. The Mango Nut Grouper ($25) is a fresh grouper filet that is crusted with macadamia, pistachio and walnut pieces then covered in mango buerre blanc (a semisweet, tropical sauce). A coconut basmatti rice is served as a side dish. The meal also comes with a house salad, fresh bread and seasonal vegetables.

Aside from having the longest waterfront bar in the world, Gator's also delivers some pretty delicious food. Here's another option if you're just looking for a light snack or an appetizer to kick off a grand meal. The Grouper Kabobs are an interesting take on grouper as precursor to dinner. Fresh pieces of grouper are skewered with peppers, onions and tomatoes. The plate is served with yellow rice and can be yours for $8.95.

Although they are known for exquisite lobster dishes and premium cuts of meat, the Lobster Pot also has a delightful grouper option. Lobster Pot Grouper ($35) is pan seared and served on top of a mountain of stone crab ravioli. It is then topped off with a lemon-crab cream sauce.  If you are searching for a high end date night or just some good grub, the Lobster Pot is a fine choice.
