Kickstart Your Day on the Beach

Healthy options along the beaches will keep your body and your wallet happy.

Pancakes, waffles and corned beef hash are always enjoyable, but they aren't the most healthy options to make a habit out of ordering. It is okay to indulge once in a while, but try some lighter plates and feel the difference.

From your body to your brain, a light and healthy start is much more beneficial than a stack of sweetness. Enjoy a good cup of joe along with a light breakfast dish at one of these beach establishments.

Build your own meal at the Seahorse Restaurant. The local's favorite offers all of the traditional breakfast favorites along with some lighter sides. Oatmeal with milk and brown sugar goes for just $2.25 per bowl and English muffins are only $1.55 each. Try a side of applesauce for $1.35 or the "famous slow cooked grits" for $2.35.

For a daily dose of vegetables, try the Eggless Special ($6.15) at Beverly's. The mixed vegetable casserole is baked with herbs and swiss cheese. It is served with a side of toast, but to make this an even lighter selection, try substituing a fruit cup for the bread.

Steam offers a variety of healthy plates, but the Fresh Fruit Parfait takes the cake. Seasonal fruit is blended with a light, farm fresh yogurt. A dose of granola is then sprinkled on top. The dish sells for $6 and goes nicely with a fresh cup of coffee.

Like Beverly's, Nina's has an array of side items and hearty dishes that allow customers to build their own healthy desire. The Fruit Bowl ($5.49) is packed with fresh, seasonal fruits while Phil's Famous Oatmeal ($4.99) is backed by nutrients from brown sugar, nuts, fruit and honey. If you need some carbs, try an English muffin for $1.50 more.

One of the most popular places to enjoy a healthy start on the beach is Sweet Sage Cafe. From egg white substitutes to fresh yogurt and fruit, the restaurant has their fair share of light and fit options. Try the Sculptured Body breakfast for $7.98. It is complete with egg whites, fresh oatmeal and fruit garnish.
