Matter of Taste: Appetizers with Attitude
There are a number of places on the beach to enjoy a good appetizer. We've found some of the most unique and tasty treats around.
Chicago Style Oysters are served as an appetizer at PJ’s Oyster Bar. The traditional method of preparation is used. 12 oysters are baked in a parmesan cheese and garlic butter. The Chicago Style Oysters are good for those who are trying oysters for the first time, considering they are cooked. Try them out for $10.99.
Order the Sampler Platter at Caddy’s on the Beach and receive a little bit of everything. For $11.85, the dish includes fresh mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers and onion rings. It is served with homemade horseradish sauce and marinara sauce for dipping. Caddy’s menu boasts that the order is “big enough to share.” Please, eat responsibly.

The Crab Stuffed Mushrooms at Lattitudes Waterfront restaurant are a tasteful appetizer. Chefs take large mushrooms and stuff them with an assortment of blue crab and snow crab. The combination of crab meat, herbs, spices and a light batter is then fried to a golden brown before being served with cocktail sauce. The plate is priced at $9.99.

Two great starters at Osaka are Edamame and the Sushi Appetizer. Edamame is a light and traditional dish of boiled soybeans, while the Sushi Appetizer is a combination of favorites. The Sushi Appetizer comes with a California roll, tuna, salmon, white meat fish and crab. Edamame can be yours for $4.25 and the Sushi Appetizer sells for $9.95.

A unique place to enjoy an appetizer is at John’s Pass Ciega Bay. Although the establishment is predominantly retail, the folks at Ciega Bay offer a unique twist on a classic appetizer. The “PizzHingle” was invented at Ciega Bay and is a combination of a shingle shape and a pizza. For $2, enjoy a cheese PizzHingle or add meatballs for an additional $1.25.
