Matter of Taste: Fiesta Food

With Cinco de Mayo rapidly approaching, we found some of the best places on the beach to enjoy some holiday grub.

If you're looking for the real deal, Agave should be your destination. On their menu, the establishment claims to be "the true flavor of Mexico." The list of options includes an array of authentic dishes like chimichangas, burritos and enchiladas.

Our pick: The Tacos Dorados ($6) is a serving of four crispy taco shells stuffed with ground beef, pork or chicken and lettuce, pico de gallo and cheese.

If you're in the mood for something a little bit lighter than the usual Mexican dish, visit Steam. There are plenty of unique dishes on the Steam menu including quesadillas, hummus and salad.

Our pick: The Margarita Mango Shrimp ($6.95) includes shrimp sautéed in mango, lime and cilantro that is then tossed in a garlic vinaigrette sauce. It is served on lettuce in a margarita glass.

If you're in the mood for a good time with that grub, check out the VIP Lounge. An extensive menu boasts items like nachos, fajitas and the well known "wet burrito." Why do they say it's "wet?" The addition of red burrito sauce and melted cheese atop the burrito defines the term.

Our pick: The Chicago Style Grilled Burrito (beef, pork or chicken is $8.95 while steak, fish or shrimp bumps it up to $11.95) is a flour tortilla stuffed with your choice of meat plus rice, beans, cheese, sour cream and onions. It is then placed on a flat iron grill to create a crispy exterior.

  • Los Mexicanos (301 Gulf Blvd, Indian Rocks Beach)

If you're looking for a place with endless options, indulge in some Mexican cuisine at Los Mexicanos. Chalupas, tostadas and fresh guacamole dip are among some of the listed options.

Our pick: The Chiles Rellenos ($11.50) comes with a large poblano pepper stuffed with either beef, chicken or cheese. Cheese and poblano sauce are then served on top of the dish with a side of rice and beans.

If you're looking for a joint with mostly pub fare, but are feeling in the Cinco de Mayo spirit and wish to ingest a Mexican favorite, Jimmy Guana's has your ticket. The majority of the menu is dedicated to fried finger foods along with some burgers and sandwiches. There is a little something for everybody.

Our pick: The Caribbean Chicken Quesadillas ($9.50) is a dish of grilled chicken strips and melted cheese sandwiched between two soft tortillas. Sour cream and salsa is served on the side.
