Meet the Artists: The Creators of the Mosaic Mural

Local artists Frank Saso and Libit Jones started sketching ideas for a glass mosaic mural that was to be fixed on the side of the Don Vista building. The center had long since talked about a type of mural being applied, but it never happened.

Pat Chase teaches glass courses at the art center and came up with the idea to make a mosaic piece for the mural. "It just seemed like a really good way to create a piece of public art that would have some longevity," said Chase.

The process has been a collaborative effort, considering the hours upon hours it takes to cut the hundreds of tiny pieces of glass. Every Tuesday, since March, artists have been meeting to make it happen.

The size of the mural is set to be 8’tall  and 22’ long with 22 panels making up the space for the glass to be placed.

Images within the mural were intended to reflect the characteristics of living on island time. Dolphins and historic landmarks are a couple of the notable objects that represent parts of the beaches.

"It has images that stay true to life here on the beach," said Chase.

After the original sketch was blown up, 30-50 people came out every week to help begin piecing together the glass mosaic mural. As of now, Chase says that the mural is about 80% complete and workers are rushing to finish it before the temperatures drop.

Pat Chase, along with the team of artists backing the project, is excited to see the end result. "It is partially up and I would say within a month it should be finished," Chase said.
