Middle School Program Gives Back to the Birds

Dunedin Highland Middle School made a recent trip to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary. The group donated goods, cleaned up the beach and learned about the facility through a guided tour.

On Thursday afternoon, Dunedin Highland Middle School students enjoyed a field trip with a cause at the Seabird Sanctuary. The eighth grade group of 67 kids decided to take their learning to the next level by choosing to donate some needed goods.

Libby Zorsky, eighth grade science teacher, is an avid supporter of the sanctuary and even spends her own time volunteering at the facility over the summer. She said that the donation process was an important step for the students to take.

Zorsky organized the event with four other teachers at the middle school. “A lot of these kids have a love for animals and for the environment,” said Zorsky. “This is, by far, the most perfect place to bring them.”

The eighth graders from Dunedin Highland Middle School are part of a gifted program at the school.

On Thursday during their visit to the sanctuary, students enjoyed a guided tour where a lot of questions were answered. The tour was followed by an hour long beach cleanup session and then finally, the kids were able to do the thing they were most excited about: unload their donations.

A few weeks before the trip, Zorsky gave each student a list of items that could be donated on their visit. Instead of the students bringing in one item, she found that they were bringing in goodies by the bag full.

Just before lunch, the students rushed to a van that was stocked with the goods they had collected over the past few weeks. Each child delivered their donation with a smile.
