The Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch was founded in 2015 in a partnership between the city of Pinellas Park and Mike Delancey, a Marine paralyzed by a sniper shot in Iraq in 2006, who started the nonprofit at the city of Pinellas Park's Lurie Park, 5500 62nd Ave. N.
The park is fully wheelchair adapted, offering cycling trails, outdoor fitness stations, a multipurpose court for volleyball, basketball, rugby, baseball, bocce and tennis, a central social outdoor space, giving an opportunity and space for veterans to reconnect and share experiences while also gaining strength and tools to help recover and heal.
With the help of community partners including the Armed Forces Families Foundation and local Rotary clubs, the outdoor space features two pavilions with picnic tables and grills to host events.
Additionally, the park featured a military-themed children's playground for veterans' families and two dog parks.
A memorial garden is being built at the park as well to serve as a place to honor fallen military and remember those who served their countries.
