Cello’s Charhouse is Open Again

After a three-month health related layoff, chef Sue Cello and partner Ellen Young are back serving meals at their intimate downtown eatery.

Sue Cello was supposed to off of work for three months following hip replacement surgery in December.

But like any business owner who loves what they do and needs to be open in order to be successful, she couldn’t stay away from her restaurant, Cello’s Charhouse, for quite that long.

So Chef Sue and her partner Ellen Young reopened their downtown Safety Harbor eatery a few weeks earlier than anticipated, with Cello attempting to follow doctor's orders to take it easy.

“They tell me I can’t bend over. How the heck are you supposed go through life without bending over?” the affable Cello asked.

“But I just had to get back. It’s easier for some people to stay home and relax, but not for me.”

Young said it was a simple matter of economics that forced them to reopen the restaurant three weeks ago.

“You gotta pay the bills, and you can’t do that if you’re not making any money,” she said.

But she, like Cello’s doctors and nurses, are making sure the chef takes it as easy as possible while she works her way back into shape.

In fact, the couple related a funny experience they had just recently in the restaurant.

“Sue got chewed out by a couple of nurses in the dining room the other night,” Young said. “They were asking her what the heck she was doing back at work so soon!”

Even after missing out on one of their busiest holidays of the year – Valentine’s Day, Cello says business has been better than ever since they reopened.

And she is also quick to thank everyone who sent well wishes and expressed support during her recovery.

“All the phone call, emails, cards and gift baskets I received, it was just incredible. I have the best clientele on the planet,” she said.

“The Harbor truly rocks. I love my Harborites!”
