Changes Abound at Stann’s on 5th in Safety Harbor

A new name, a new tasting menu and the addition of theme nights highlight some of the goings on at the downtown eatery.

Stann Cherniack is a longtime veteran of the restaurant industry.

He has enough experience to know that in order to remain successful you have to keep your business fresh, and sometimes you have to go with the hand that’s dealt to you.

So when he was recently forced to change the name of his downtown Safety Harbor eatery by eliminating the word "Woodstock" from the title, Cherniack did just that — overnight, without hesitation.

“It’s unfortunate someone put the spotlight on us and we had to change the name,” he told Patch recently.

“It cost us a lot of money to change everything that quickly, but not as much as it would have been to fight them.”

Cherniack was quick to point out that the new name will not affect the quality of the service nor the food.

“The quality has not changed, the menu has not changed,” he said. “Nothing has changed except the name.”

But there are other changes taking place at the Fifth Avenue hot spot.

In keeping with the entertainment theme of the establishment, local performer Laura Dent will host her first mystery dinner theater at Stann’s this Saturday, with a walking tour of the downtown area soon to follow.

In addition Cherniack recently added a bi-weekly bike night to the slate of events, the first of which was held last Wednesday.

As if that weren’t enough, he incorporated a tasting menu, a four-course meal that includes specialty items like ahi tuna tartare and pan-seared foie gras for a cost of $55 per person, to complement the regular dinner menu.

"A lot of high-end restaurants do tasting menus, but no one around here is doing this," Cherniack said.

Cherniack said he wants to put the whole name fiasco behind him and get back to doing what he loves to do: feeding and entertaining the patrons of his restaurant.

He hopes that by adding new menu items as well as special events, he will be able to do just that.

“It hasn’t changed much since we opened - the menu is still the same and the food is still excellent,” he said. “We’re just trying to keep everything fresh and new and have something for everyone.”

“This place is about a concept, not a name,” he added. “Plus, I kinda like my name up there!”
