Espiritu Santo Pastor Reacts To New Pope
Safety Harbor's Father Robert Schneider expressed surprise and optimism at the naming of Pope Francis on Wednesday.
Catholics from all over the globe have been reacting to the news that a new pope was named on Wednesday to replace Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned his position last month.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a 76-year-old former archbishop of Buenos Aires who will be known as Pope Francis, is the first non-European pope in the modern era.
Here in Safety Harbor, the news of Bergoglio’s selection was met with a mixture of surprise and optimism, according to Father Robert Schneider of Espiritu Santo Catholic Church.

“The first question I’ve been hearing is ‘who is he?’ ” Father Schneider said by phone. “This was not a name I was familiar with or heard a lot about.
“I understand he’s conservative theologically but also very pastoral with people," he added. "The fact that he hasn’t been in the Vatican is going to be interesting in regards to how he adjusts to the position.”

Father Schneider said the selection of a Jesuit pope from Argentina was a significant one, as was Bergoglio’s choice to take the name "Francis" for his papacy.
“I think the fact that he’s from South America is a positive thing,” he said. “Being a Jesuit and taking the name ‘Francis,' which shows intellect and spirituality, combined with his heritage makes for a very interesting choice.”
He also said some people he has spoken with have expressed concerns over Bergoglio's age.
“His age is surprising. Because of his age people thought he might be a little too old for office. I believe it will bring the question of how long can he serve.”
But Father Schneider was quick to point out that despite the challenges Pope Francis will face, and the questions that will surround his selection, he believes the choice was a sound one.
“I think they wanted to have continuity but do something novel as well,” he said of the conclave of cardinals that made the selection.
“But I think as we get to know him, we’ll find out that he is very conservative theologically but very outgoing and pastoral, or shepherding, as well.”
