Peter Max Coming To Syd Entel Galleries This Weekend

Fresh on the heels of one celebrity artist appearing in downtown Safety Harbor, another one - this one known more for art than acting - will be here this weekend.

Peter Max, the world renowned illustrator and artist whose iconic career spans six decades, will appear at Syd Entel Galleries to discuss and promote his work on Saturday and Sunday.

Galllery owner Susan Benjamin doesn't expect quite the huge crowds she had when Jane Seymour was here last month. But she does believe Max is probably the biggest living celebrity artist in the world today.

"He's like a rock star," she said on Thursday while preparing for the show. "He just overwhelms people when they meet him because he's so talented and well- known."

The gallery will feature more than 100 original Max works, including classics and some from his new series dedicated to the masters of art. 

Benjamin says the show will be a mixture of mixed media, paper and canvas pieces, as well as some eclectic items like painted NFL helmets, cowboy boots and guitars. All items will be for sale.

"He uses a lot of the same images, but with new twists," she said of the colorful American flags, hearts and flowers that are staples of his work.

Benjamin pointed out that contrary to popular belief, the artist does not live here in town.

"People think he lives here because he's done so many shows here," Benjamin said. "He doesn't live here, but he really loves Safety Harbor."
