Safety Harbor Will Observe Earth Hour 2013 Saturday
Mayor Ayoub decided to honor the worldwide initiative to conserve energy at the urging of a resident during the City Commission meeting Monday night.
Mayor Joe Ayoub urged citizens of Safety Harbor to take part in Earth Hour 2013 this Saturday evening after hearing a presentation from resident Priscilla Nystrom during the City Commission meeting on Monday night.
Nystrom informed the commission that Earth Hour is a global initiative to help show concern for the environment by asking citizens to turn off their lights for a period of one hour on Saturday night.
“My neighbors and I have been a part of this Earth Hour.org,” Nystrom said. “This is a global initiative between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. March 23rd and all you have to do is turn your lights off.”

“It’s just an hour of our time, and I just think that in a day and age when we need to conserve our energy and our power and our water, this is a very important event and I think everybody can participate in some way or another.”
According to the Earth Hour website, the event is “the single largest symbolic mass participation event in the world, inspiring a global community of millions of people in 7,001 cities and towns across a 152 countries and territories to switch off lights for an hour as a massive show of concern for the environment.”
