Two Road Races Added To 2013 Safety Harbor Event Schedule

The City Commission approved 5Ks hosted by the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida and the Humane Society of Pinellas last week.

The 2013 Safety Harbor events calendar was already chock full of road races, with no fewer than five such events dotting the schedule that was presented by the city in January.

Now you can add two more runs to the list.

Last week the City Commission approved a pair of races to be added to this year's slate, both backed by charitable organizations with good causes.

The Labor Day Tail Waggin' Walk & 5K for the Hounds, presented by the Humane Society of Pinellas, will be held on Saturday, August 31, and the Thin Mint 5K, presented by the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, will take place on Saturday, September 28.

Both events will originate at the Safety Harbor Marina with a course that will run in and around the downtown area; the city agreed to waive the $1,000 marina rental fee since both groups are non-profit organizations.

Girl Scouts of West Central Florida official Terri Costello spoke about the organization's first ever 5K after the June 3rd commission meeting.

"Our council has never had a road race, so we are excited to have our first one take place here in Safety Harbor," she said.

"We're looking for different ways to raise funds for our organization, and we think this will be a great way to increase our fundraising resources."

The Humane Society of Pinellas could certainly use a fundraising event after news broke this week that the facility's roof was damaged during Tropical Storm Andrea.

One thing that won't hurt participation in either event? The always welcome presence of Girl Scout cookies and cute critters!
