Torrington, a highway patrol report said, failed to keep his Hyundai in the northbound lane and struck the front left of Johnson’s Malibu. The impact forced the Malibu off the road and into a utility pole, the report said.

Johnson was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The child was airlifted, also in serious condition, to All Children’s Hospital, troopers say.
