5 Things: March is Florida Archaeology Month

March 1 will kick off statewide events celebrating the discovery of Florida history, including a March 17 event in Sarasota.

1. March is Florida Archaeology Month and you can see all sorts of events listed around the state

Check out the Sarasota event on March 17 at Archaeology Lab from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring "hands-on activities, demonstrations, tours, lectures, films; and free hot dogs and lemonade."

2. Get your tickets now for the 22nd annual Historic Homes Tour on Sunday.

This year's installment visits the Bungalow Hill neighborhood of Hudson Bayou. Five homes will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day for $20 admission to benefit the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation. 3. parents have until Friday to let the school system how its doing in communication, curriculum, management, safety, academics, facilities maintenance and parent involvement.

 The parent survey has been translated into the five languages other than English that are most often spoken in students’ homes: Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and Haitian Creole.

Parents and guardians may take the survey by visiting www.SarasotaCountySchools.net and clicking on the “Parent Climate Survey” button on the left side of the home page. Parents can take the survey at any Sarasota County school or any Sarasota County library or call the district office at 927-4009 to have a copy of the survey mailed to them.

4.  will host a Leap Year giveaway on Wednesday from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to celebrate the day that only comes every four years. The restaurants will give customers a free four-count  Chick-n-Minis. There is no purchase necessary but there is a limit of one free item per customer.

5. It's Peace Corps Week and to celebrate the Family Heritage House Museum at  (SCF), 5840 26th St. West, will host Peace Corps volunteers who will share their experiences with the public on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The presentation is free and open to the public. Scheduled to speak are: Kristen Anderson, SCF College Reach-Out Program director; Matthew Keirle, SCF natural sciences assistant professor; Robert Donovan, retired SCF professor and department chair; and Anita Rogers, former museum specialist, will share their experiences as Peace Corps volunteers in Niger, Paraguay, Brazil and Afghanistan.
