5 Things To Know: Begging Dolphins And Their Bad Health Habits
Mote Marine will sponsor a talk about dolphin and human nutrition at Half Shell Oyster House on Thursday.

1. Teenagers and Sarasota Bay dolphins have at least one thing in common: they'll always beg for food and you shouldn't give in to their desires.
Join the discussion about nutrition in humans and dolphins from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7 during a new informal Science Café sponsored by Mote Marine Laboratory at the Half Shell Oyster House, 1991 Main St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
The cafe will feature Dr. Katie McHugh, a researcher with the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, a partnership of the Chicago Zoological Society and Mote, and Adriel Zahniser, a registered dietitian working for Sarasota County Schools as a nutrition educator and chef.

2. FridayFest returns for the summer starting Friday, June 8 feauturing Yesterdayze. Each FridayFest is free runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs, relax and have fun. Emcee Cliff Roles will help move the event along. FridayFest takes place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the Festival will move indoors to the Grand Foyer of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Bringing in food and drink from outside the Fest is prohibited; coolers and weapons of any kind are also prohibited.

3. Watch out for flying volleyballs on this weekend as Dig The Beach Volleyball tournament returns. The series will be visiting Siesta Key twice this summer, Friday and Saturday, June 9-10 and July 14-15. The upcoming weekend of play will feature two full days of action. Saturday will showcase adult two-person teams in both male and female divisions. The top professional players in Florida will be fighting for a $4,000 prize purse.
The events are free and open to the public. Spectators and family members are welcome and are encouraged to come and watch the games. Play will begin on Saturday at 8 a.m. and wrap up around 7 p.m. Junior play on Sunday will begin at 8 a.m. and be completed by 5 p.m.
4. Today we'll find out whether it'll be fireworks or duds at the City Commission meeting concerning special events downtown. The City Commission will have a special meeting at 3 p.m. Wednesday in City Hall to discuss . Groups are already organizing via Facebook to show particular support for continuing large events centered around Five Points Park. Who will win? Stay with Patch to find out.
5. Reservations are going fast for the annual Daddy-Daughter Date Night at Chick-fil-A restaurants. Sign up now at www.daddydaughterdate.com. The will participate in this event on June 16 where they encourage the dads and daughters to dress up as wait service will be offered. They will also offer a horse and carriage ride, have a chocolate fountain, dance floor with a DJ (dance with the Cow), every daughter receives a goodie-bag and flower and more.
