Accused Sarasota Burglar Caught Sleeping

A man accused of burglarizing a Sarasota home while its occupants slept was caught snoozing in a van and brought into custody.

SARAOSTA, FL — Devon Evans stands accused of burglarizing a Sarasota home last month while the people inside slept. So it might seem fitting that Sarasota Police officers say Evans was brought into custody after a tipster told detectives they could find him sleeping in a van.

The case that led to 27-year-old’s arrest unfolded in the early morning hours of April 24. At the time, police said someone forced their way into a home in the 1000 block of Cocoanut Avenue. The burglar, police noted in an email to media, removed several items of value before leaving. The home’s occupants slept through the burglary and were uninjured.

Shortly after the burglary, police announced Evans as a suspect. He remained elusive until May 12 around 4:25 a.m. when a tip came in that he could be found sound asleep in a van parked in the area of 29th Street and Dixie Avenue, the police department reported.

That tip paid off, authorities say. Evans was charged with one felony count of burglary of an occupied dwelling. He was booked into the Sarasota County Jail following his arrest and was being held without bond as of Monday.
