To enhance the reliability and sustainability of the City of Sarasota infrastructure, the Utilities Department is beginning two significant projects to replace aging sewer force mains and water mains on Lido Key, St. Armands Key, Coon Key, Bird Key, Siesta Key and downtown.
The work is expected to have minimal impact on the public with construction occurring in right-of-ways.
The projects are expected to be finished by the end of December 2012.

The downtown project will occur in the right-of-way on Gulfstream Avenue near lift station 16 just south of Main Street.
Three hundred feet of force main will be replaced. This is the line which was scheduled for replacement but failed last November and was temporarily repaired.

The permitted parking lot in front of the lift station will be closed for the duration of the project.
Gulfstream Avenue will remain open to traffic, although there could be occasional minor traffic delays. The project is expected to begin next week and finish in mid-November 2012.
The Keys force main replacement project will occur in three areas:
(1) Coon Key and the Siesta Key bridge areas (staging currently is underway near Bay Island)
(2) Lido Key and St. Armands Key (mid-April – November 2012)
(3) Bird Key ((late April – September 2012)
The City of Sarasota is dedicated to improving the reliability of its infrastructure to reduce the risk of potential sewage spills and maintain high quality customer service.
The City Commission has allocated $15 million over 10 years for infrastructure capital improvements with force mains and lift stations receiving the highest priority.
