Arrest Made In Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash: Sarasota Police
An 81-year-old woman crossing the street in downtown Sarasota was killed in the fatal hit-and-run crash in February, police said.

SARASOTA, FL — A Manatee County man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened earlier this year in Sarasota, authorities said.
Devan Carroll, 35, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a first-degree felony. Sarasota police said in a news release. He was taken into custody at his home around 6 a.m.
Officers responded to the crash, which happened Feb. 29, just after 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Cocoanut Avenue and 2nd Street.

An 81-year-old woman who had been celebrating her birthday at the Sarasota Opera House was hit by a truck while crossing the street in a clearly marked crosswalk, police said.
The driver, later identified as Carroll, left the scene and the woman died at the scene.

Surveillance video footage shows the truck hitting the woman. About 18 hours after the crash, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office found and seized the truck from a Palmetto home, police said.
Investigators confirmed that Carroll had been driving the vehicle the evening of the crash, as he was pulled over by deputies just hours earlier.
Carroll is currently awaiting extradition to the Sarasota County Jail.
