SARASOTA, FL — Sarasota County School Board member Bridget Ziegler has stepped down from her role with a nonprofit that trains conservative activists as an investigation continues into a rape allegation against her husband, according to reports.

And at least two school board members want Bridget Ziegler to resign her post on the board. The issue is slated to be on next week's board agenda.

Christian Ziegler, chair of the Republican Party of Florida, has been accused of raping a woman who the couple had a three-way sexual relationship with. His wife confirmed to investigators that they had a previous sexual encounter with the victim.

The state GOP leader has maintained his innocence and said he has no intentions of stepping down from the position. Both Republicans and Democrats in Florida are calling for him to resign, including Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Rick Scott.

His wife, who is also a co-founder of the Moms for Liberty, though, has stepped down from her role as vice president of school board leadership programs for the Leadership Institute. The Sarasota-based organization confirmed to WFLA Wednesday that she no longer works with them.

There have also been calls for Bridget Ziegler to resign from the Sarasota County School Board.

"She is nothing but a distraction from before and only getting worse, and it will never go away as long as she sits there," board member Tom Edwards told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. "As a school board member, my focus is on our students, their academic achievement and educational outcomes. It is not on the Zieglers' escapades."

School board chair, Karen Rose, agrees that Ziegler must go.

“Our community has been rocked by the disturbing revelations surrounding my fellow school board member Bridget Ziegler and the criminal allegations against her husband, Christian Ziegler. I am shocked and deeply saddened by the conduct and deplore the salacious news coverage. But my first responsibility is to the Sarasota County School District,” Rose told Florida Politics. “So for the good of our students, teachers, staff and community, I will be calling on Mrs. Ziegler to step down from her position on the School Board.”

Rose said she plans to ask the superintendent to place an item asking Ziegler to step down on the board’s Dec. 12 meeting agenda.
