FL Sets New Daily Coronavirus Record With 9,585 Cases

Florida set yet another one-day coronavirus surge Saturday with 9,585 new cases of the virus.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida set yet another one-day coronavirus surge Saturday with 9,585 new cases of the virus following two weeks of record-setting spikes.

Mayor Carolos Gimenez of Miami-Dade , which is Florida's most populous county, announced plans to shut down Miami-area beaches over the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend and possibly longer.

The previous record of 8,942 new cases was set on Friday as state officials ordered all consumption of on-premises alcohol suspended at bars statewide to slow the spread of the deadly disease.

State health officials reported a total of 132,545 cases of the virus Saturday up from 122,960 cases over the previous 24-hour period.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has said the median age of people testing positive for the virus has shifted he has had no plans to require Floridians to wear face coverings in public even as cities like Miami now require it.

A Patch review of Florida Health Department data found that 21 Florida counties reported median ages of people testing positive under 40 as of Thursday.

The total number of deaths from the new coronavirus in Florida rose to 3,390 from 3,366 a day earlier.

Florida counties reported 24 new deaths Saturday. That compares with 39 deaths Friday, 46 new deaths Thursday, 45 new deaths Wednesday, 65 new deaths Tuesday, 12 deaths Monday, 17 deaths Sunday and 40 deaths last Saturday.

Miami-Dade County reported one new death. Broward County one reported new death. Palm Beach County reported two new deaths.

Pinellas County reported eight new deaths, more than any other county in the state. Polk County reported five new deaths. Martin County reported two new deaths.

Gadsden County reported one new death as did Hendry County, Manatee County, Suwannee County and Volusia County.

Health officials reported 14,136 total hospitalizations in Florida, up from 13,987 over the previous 24-hour period. That represents an increase of 149 new hospitalizations.

Miami-Dade reported 31,562 cases of the virus as of Saturday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 14,046 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 12,928 cases.

Those three South Florida counties are still considered the epicenter of Florida's outbreak but other parts of the state now account for a greater share of cases.

Florida had a 7.2 percent positive test rate for the virus Saturday based on 1,830,791 tests. The percentage of positive cases has also increased over the past two weeks.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 9,130 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 8,837 cases.
