Florida Reports 5,266​ New Coronavirus Cases

State health officials reported 5,266​ new coronavirus cases as four South Florida counties plan to shut down their beaches for the holiday.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 5,266 new coronavirus cases Monday as four South Florida counties announced plans to shut down their beaches over the upcoming Fourth of July weekend.

The latest one-day record was set on Saturday with 9,585 new cases following a string of records over the past two weeks. State officials suspended the consumption of on-premises alcohol at bars to slow the spread of the deadly disease.

Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Palm Beach County and Monroe County all announced plans to close beaches over the holiday weekend.

Florida reported a total of 146,341 cases, up from 141,075 cases over the previous 24-hour period.

The total number of deaths from the new coronavirus in Florida rose to 3,447 from 3,419 a day earlier.

Four Florida counties reported 28 new deaths Monday. That compares with 29 new deaths Sunday, deaths 24 Saturday, 39 deaths Friday, 46 deaths Thursday, 45 deaths Wednesday, 65 deaths Tuesday and 12 deaths last Monday.

Miami-Dade County reported 22 new deaths. Hillsborough County reported three new deaths. Volusia County reported two new deaths. Citrus County reported one new death.

Health officials reported 14,354 hospitalizations up from 14,244 over the previous 24-hour period. That represents an increase of 110 new hospitalizations.

Miami-Dade reported 35,222 cases of the virus as of Monday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 15,045 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 13,711 cases.

Those three South Florida counties account for a combined total of 63,978 cases — or about 44 percent of all of the cases in the state. The percentage has declined from 59 percent on April 19 as other Florida counties account for a great share of cases.

Florida had a 7.6 percent positive test rate for the virus Monday based on 1,914,151 tests. The percentage of positive cases has increased over the past two weeks.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 10,323 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 10,014 cases.
