Florida Surpasses 100,000 Coronavirus Cases
Fueled by four record-setting spikes last week, the number of new coronavirus cases in Florida on Monday surpassed the 100,000 mark.
TALLAHASSEE, FL — Fueled by four record-setting spikes last week, the number of new coronavirus cases in Florida on Monday surpassed the 100,000 mark.
Florida health officials reported a total of 100,217 cases in the state, an increase of 2,926 new cases over the previous 24-hour period. The record of 4,049 new cases was set on Saturday following a string of 1,000-plus case days.
"Somebody who tests positive may not have any symptoms at all and not even know they are infected," Gov. Ron DeSantis said over the weekend. "The vast majority of the cases that we're seeing right now in the state of Florida are presenting without any symptoms."

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and a number of nearby communities responded to the spike in cases by imposing a so-called mask-in-public rule.
"Everyone will have to be wearing a mask in public," Suarez said in announcing the new requirement. "Right now, the mask requirement is only when you are inside, when you are in parks, but are not exercising. Now it will be a public requirement."

DeSantis said many of the people testing positive in the recent spikes are between the ages of 20 and 30.
"Our cases are shifting in a radical direction younger," the governor said. "The vast majority of the people in that queue who test positive do not require clinical attention, and that's just because of the way the coronavirus works."
A Patch review of Florida case data confirms most counties experienced a downward change in the median age of cases since earlier in the month.

Those three South Florida counties are still considered the epicenter of Florida's outbreak even though none of the three counties reported new deaths Monday.
