Florida Surpasses 200,000 Coronavirus Cases

Florida surpassed the 200,000 mark Sunday for the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Fueled by multiple one-day spikes, including more than 11,000 new cases reported on the Fourth of July, Florida on Sunday surpassed 200,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in the state.

Florida health officials reported 10,059 new cases of the virus Sunday after the state set another all-time record of 11,458 cases a day earlier and three days after Thursday's previous one-day record of more than 10,000 new cases.

Florida had a 9.1 percent positive test rate for the virus Sunday as the number of tests administered in the state reached 2,202,095. The percentage of positive cases has been increasing for about three weeks, which has been a particular concern for areas like Miami-Dade County.

"We have seen a sharp rise in the positivity rate," Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said on Sunday's "Face The Nation" program on CBS. "We had it down to about 8 percent of the people getting tested were showing up positive. Now over 20 percent are showing up positive. That's the problem for us."

The mayor said his county, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, has seen an increase in young people who test positive.

"We just have more people that are being positive. The more you have at the end, you are going to have more people pass away at the end, unfortunately, because it's just a question of numbers," Gimenez said. "We have seen an increase in the number of hospitalizations. We have seen an increase in the number of ICUs and also an increase in the number of ventilations."

The state's total positive cases rose to 200,111 from 190,052 over the previous 24-hour period as South Florida beaches remained shuttered for the the Fourth of July weekend in an attempt to slow the spread of the deadly virus.

Miami-Dade County is considered the epicenter of Florida's outbreak along with nearby Broward and Palm Beach counties but other Florida counties have been accounting for a greater share of cases in recent days.

Florida's largest public health system, Miami-based Jackson Health, said it will limit inpatient surgeries and procedures to emergency and urgent cases starting Monday to make sure beds are available for seriously ill patients, including coronavirus patients. Many of the new positive cases in the state are of people between 33 to 37.

Jackson Health CEO Carlos A. Migoya said on WPLG TV's "This Week In South Florida Sunday that he does not believe Florida has seen its peak cases yet.

"We're not on the downside yet," he said. "We will probably see the peak around the end of July, first week of August."

Florida's has set a string of one-day records over the past three weeks while the disease also has taken its youngest victim in the state, an 11-year-old boy with special needs from Miami-Dade County.

State officials suspended the consumption of on-premises alcohol at bars, and a number of Florida counties and municipalities imposed mandatory mask orders. Miami-Dade County also imposed a curfew to limit the number of people on the streets at night.
