International Manhunt Ends for Man Wanted for Sexual Battery

William Weimar, wanted as a suspect in the assaulting a 6-year-old girl, was captured last night in Cancun, Mexico, and transported to Texas today, where he will await extradition to Florida.

William C. Weimar, 70, has been arrested on a Sarasota County warrant for Capital Sexual Battery, stemming from an assault on a 6-year-old girl, a Sheriff's Office release said.

According to the Sheriff's Office, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Weimar on January 24th, and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, Tampa Office, on January 31st.

With additional assistance from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard, Weimar was tracked to Havana, Cuba, and then information was developed that he was headed to Mexico, the Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators contacted the U.S. Marshals Service Mexico City Foreign Field Office, and the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, which requested the assistance of the Mexican Navy who ultimately located and detained Weimar.

Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight said he would like to acknowledge the outstanding inter-agency cooperation that contributed to the successful resolution to the manhunt. 

There are no criminal or civil records listed for Weimar, according to the Sarasota County Clerk of the Courts website.
