MD Girl Scout Sets Up Lemonade Stand To Raise Money For FL Hurricane Recovery
A MD 5th-grader, Girl Scout set up a lemonade stand to raise funds for hurricane recovery in Sarasota area, the Community Foundation, said.

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — When Maryland Girl Scout Nora Vavere learned about the devastation caused by Hurricane Milton in Sarasota County — especially the storm’s effect on children in the region — she wanted to help however she could.
The Baltimore fifth-grader and member of Girl Scout Troop 2089 quickly set up a stand selling lemonade and hot chocolate in her Canton neighborhood, according to a news release from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
She operated the stand from October through April and sent the proceeds, $77.04, to the foundation to help those affected by the storm.

Nora also sent a handwritten note to the foundation, writing, “I wanted to donate this money to the Community Foundation to help people who were in the hurricane get food, rebuild, have water and a home, and be safe with their families.”

The organization commended the girl for her donation.
“Nora’s compassion, her selflessness and her generosity deeply moved all of us at the Community Foundation,” Jay Young, vice president of philanthropy, said. “We believe strongly that anyone can be a philanthropist, and Nora proves it. Through the simple act of selling lemonade and hot chocolate, she shows that everyone can give back in some way.”

The Community Foundation’s Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund was created in 2022 in partnership with The Patterson Foundation as Hurricane Ian made landfall. Since then, nearly $10 million has been raised through the fund to help residents rebuild and recover.
Nora’s donation was given to this fund, the foundation said.
