Police: Man Lied To Deputies After He Shot Himself

Sarasota County Sheriff's detectives said Steven Lipsey made up a story about being robbed after he accidentally shot himself in the hand.

A convicted felon from Sarasota who authorities say lied about being robbed Wednesday night after he accidentally shot himself is facing several charges.

Steven Lipsey, 24, of 3149 Monica Parkway, Sarasota, is facing charges for giving a false report to law enforcement, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, tampering with physical evidence and making a false official statement, according to the .

Deputies responded to Lipsey’s home at 11:22 p.m. Wednesday and found he had a single gunshot wound to his left hand.

While receiving care at , Lipsey claimed a man named “Greg” tried to rob him, shot him and ran from the scene, according to the probable cause affidavit. Detectives soon determined that the forensic evidence didn’t match what Lipsey said.

Detectives followed a blood trail to the back porch of Lipsey’s home where they found a 9mm black semiautomatic handgun on the roof.

It turns out that Lipsey wanted to avoid going to jail for being a convicted felon with a gun, so he made up a story, according to the sheriff’s office.

Lipsey achieved felon status in Michigan in 2007 for carrying a concealed weapon, according to the affidavit. He was also wanted in Michigan for violating probation for carrying a concealed weapon, according to the affidavit.
