Sarasota Beach Cleared For Possible Military Explosive

A Sarasota beach was cleared Friday after police discovered a possible military explosive.

SARASOTA, FL — A Sarasota beach was cleared Friday after police discovered a possible military explosive near some trashcans.

Genevieve Judge of the Sarasota Police Department described the device as a military marking round that was treated as a possible explosive.

"Officers believe it could have washed up on shore and someone found it and placed it near the trash cans," Judge told Patch.

She said the North Lido Beach parking area near Polk Drive and Benjamin Franklin Drive was closed for a time along with a section of the beach after the device was discovered early Friday morning.

"Sarasota Police officers were called to the area after someone noticed the device near a garbage can in the parking area just before 7 a.m.," she said. "Members of the Sarasota Police Department Explosive Materials Unit responded and determined the device was a military marking round. "

Judge said nearby MacDill Air Force Base made arrangements for the device to be picked up and taken away for disposal.
