Sarasota Homeowner Shoots, Kills Burglary Suspect

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Sunday burglary that took a deadly turn.

SARASOTA, FL — A 30-year-old convicted felon is dead following a Sunday afternoon run-in with a Sarasota homeowner.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, a homeowner in the 2300 block of Constitution Boulevard came home from being out of town shortly before 1:30 p.m. Jan. 8 to find a man inside his property. Deputies say the burglar assaulted the homeowner and then retreated to a bedroom where he armed himself with a baseball bat.

“The homeowner used a firearm to shoot and subsequently kill the suspect,” the agency wrote in an email to media.

The deceased has been identified as Glenn Edward Oliver.

“He has an extensive criminal history and was recently released from prison after a 10-year sentence for robbery with a firearm and carjacking,” the email said.

While the investigation into the shooting remains active, the homeowner is not facing charges at this time, the agency said.

“Detectives believe the homeowner shot in self-defense,” the agency noted.

No further information, including the homeowner’s name, is being released at this time.
