SARASOTA, FL — Sarasota police said early Sunday morning they were investigating the shooting death of a teenager.

"Sarasota police detectives are currently investigating a suspicious death involving a teenager in the 1700 block of Gregg Court," said the agency's Genevieve Judge during the overnight hours.

The incident happened shortly after midnight. The teenager was not immediately identified.

"When our officers arrived, they found a teenager who had passed away unfortunately as a result of a suspected gunshot wound," Judge explained.

She said detectives received several leads and were confident they would find the shooter.

"It is unknown exactly why this teenager was in the area of Gregg court in the early morning hours of Sunday, exactly why he was here if he lives here or not, that's unknown at this point," Judge added.
