School Bus Driver Dies After Crash At Publix: FL Highway Patrol

OSPREY, FL — A school bus driver died Friday morning after suffering a medical event behind the wheel and crashing in a Publix supermarket parking lot, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

The driver, a 59-year-old North Port man, was traveling south on U.S. 41, approaching the Blackburn Point Road intersection, just after 9 a.m.

He left the road, traveled onto the grassy shoulder and drove into the parking lot at 1350 S. Tamiami Trail, FHP said.

He hit two parked and unoccupied vehicles — a van and an SUV.

He was brought to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
