Sheriff's Office On Lookout For Drunken Boaters

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office urges folks to use common sense and best judgment when boating Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day Weekend is not only a time to hit the road, but the water as well.

Boating accidents are most often caused by factors such as carelessness, inattention, navigation-rule violations, inexperience and alcohol consumption, according to the .

The Marine Patrol unit will make sure boaters have all safety gear onboard and that it is operational, and will enforce Boating Under the Influence laws.

“It is important to educate the public about safe boating,” said Sheriff Tom Knight. “Just like impaired motorists, impaired boaters risk their lives and the lives of others when they are at the helm. We are committed to keeping Sarasota County waterways safe for residents and visitors alike.”

• Boater safety course certificates for operators born after Jan. 1, 1988.

• Channel markers and speed limits, too, the sheriff's office says.

• Children younger than 6 years old are also required to wear a life jacket in Florida, too.
