Smoking Ban At Sarasota County-Owned Beaches, Parks Takes Effect Soon
A smoking ban at Sarasota County-owned beaches and parks will go into effect Oct. 1, officials said.
SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — A new law banning smoking at all Sarasota County-owned beaches, beach access points, parks, natural areas, and youth athletic and play areas will take effect Oct. 1, according to a county news release.
The ban prohibiting smoking at the county’s beaches and parks passed in a 4-1 vote by Sarasota County commissioners on July 11. Commissioner Mike Moran was the only no vote against the measure.
County staff, which launched a public outreach campaign to educate residents and visitors about the change, will update all park signage.

Since 2007, commissioners have supported the regulation of outdoor smoking. New state legislation enacted in 2002 allowed local counties and municipalities to further regulate smoking within public beaches and parks, excluding unfiltered cigarettes.
“Sarasota County remains committed to providing safe, world-class beaches and park amenities, and improving water quality,” Nicole Rissler, director of parks, recreation and natural resources, said. “This ordinance promotes healthy recreation while reducing second-hand smoke and cigarette litter that could harm people and wildlife or end up in our waterways.”
