VEX Robotics Competition Is Saturday At SCTI

Sarasota County Schools will have its first-ever district-wide VEX robotics competition.

The competition, which includes nine other tech-related contests, will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, followed by an awards ceremony.

The event is designed to showcase student skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The VEX Robotics Design System is a robotics kit that provides the tools needed to design, build, and program robots to compete in specific tasks.

In addition to robotics, students will try their hands at problem-solving, dragster design, structural engineering, computer-aided three-dimensional design, multimedia production and desktop publishing, among other technical skills. 

“Our school district has made significant progress in promoting and implementing STEM activities that enhance student learning and engage our students in project-based activities,” said Mellissa Morrow, the district’s director of Career and Technical Education. “This event reflects our success providing students with the skills they need to be successful in college and the 21st century workforce.”

The competition is being sponsored by the Technology Student Association, a non-profit national student organization devoted to teaching technology
education to young people.
