Weekend Things: Tim Meadows Performs at McCurdy's

Saturday Night Live alumnus Tim Meadows will perform his stand-up gig at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre this weekend.

1. "The Ladies Man" himself Tim Meadows is coming to Sarasota performing stand-up at this weekend. We're not sure if they'll serve courvoisier for the ocassion. 

The Saturday Night Live alumnus will have shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday along with 9:45 p.m. performances Friday and Saturday. Ticket prices are $18 and $22. Tickets can be purchased online

2. Country music star Kevin Welch will perform at a show to benefit  Friday.

Welch moved to Nashville in 1978 to work as a songwriter.  Singers like Ricky Skaggs, Moe Bandy, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and Don Williams have used his material. Welch will perform Friday, June 8 at 525 Kumquat Court. Tickets are $12 in advance/$15 at the door.

3.  FridayFest returns for the summer starting Friday, June 8 feauturing YesterdayzeEach FridayFest is free runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs, relax and have fun. Emcee Cliff Roles will help move the event along. FridayFest takes place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the Festival will move indoors to the Grand Foyer of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Bringing in food and drink from outside the Fest is prohibited; coolers and weapons of any kind are also prohibited.

4. Watch out for flying volleyballs on  this weekend as Dig The Beach Volleyball tournament returns. The series will be visiting Siesta Key twice this summer, Friday and Saturday, June 9-10 and July 14-15.  The upcoming weekend of play will feature two full days of action. Saturday will showcase adult two-person teams in both male and female divisions.  The top professional players in Florida will be fighting for a $4,000 prize purse.

The events are free and open to the public.  Spectators and family members are welcome and are encouraged to come and watch the games.  Play will begin on Saturday at 8 a.m. and wrap up around 7 p.m. Junior play on Sunday will begin at 8 a.m. and be completed by 5 p.m. 

5. Teenagers and Sarasota Bay dolphins have at least one thing in common: they'll always beg for food and you shouldn't give in to their desires. 

Join the discussion about nutrition in humans and dolphins from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7 during a new informal Science Café sponsored by Mote Marine Laboratory at the Half Shell Oyster House, 1991 Main St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. 

The cafe will feature Dr. Katie McHugh, a researcher with the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, a partnership of the Chicago Zoological Society and Mote, and Adriel Zahniser, a registered dietitian working for Sarasota County Schools as a nutrition educator and chef.
