Water Works Building Turning Into Eatery

Ulele will open by February 2014, officials say.

Last year, owners of the Columbia Restaurant were chosen by city officials to turn the abandoned Water Works Building in Tampa into a dining destination on the water.

A few weeks ago, Richard Gonzmart received the lease needed to move forward with plans at 1804 N. Highland Avenue, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

To signify plans moving forward, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held Wednesday on the grounds of the building to commemorate Ulele, the restaurant and brewery that will offer a Native American culinary experience for patrons, according to city officials. Gonzmart is teaming up with Keith Sedita, who helped develop Carmel Cafe & Wine Bar.

The restaurant, which will be about 400 yards north of the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, should be completed by February, according to city officials.

In addition, graduates from local high school culinary programs will be sought to work at Ulele.
