Iowa Student Missionaries Take Part in Sulphur Springs Laundry Project

Students from the University of Iowa will spend today washing clothes for low-income Sulphur Springs residents.

Student missionaries from the University of Iowa will spend their day March 17 washing clothes for the less fortunate.

In a project organized by Current of Tampa Bay Inc., the students, along with members of Common Ground Christian Church of Seminole Heights, will participate in the Laundry Project Sunday, March 17 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Big Wash Coin Laundry at 908 E. Waters Ave., Tampa.

This is the first time Current will partner with University of Iowa students, but the second time Current has joined with Common Ground Christian Church to hold a Laundry Project in the Tampa area.

“We are very excited to introduce University of Iowa students to the Laundry Project,” said Current’s founder and president, Jason Sowell. “It is wonderful to partner again with Common Ground, as they are a great group of compassionate people. Sulphur Springs is a special location for Laundry Projects to continue to thrive because it is the very place that the project was originated in. It is always a blessing to help families in that community.”

University of Iowa students are hosting a mission trip as part of their spring break, choosing Tampa as their city of service. The students are part of a mission group that meets regularly to give back through community volunteer efforts.

Last year, Current’s Laundry Project offered free laundry services at one laundromat. This year, due to an outpouring of support, it has expanded to four neighboring locations.

The Laundry Project is still in need of $300 to reach its fundraising goal. Donations of quarters (rolls of $10), coloring books, crayons, laundry baskets and bags, bleach, fabric softener and liquid laundry detergent are always appreciated. Donations can be brought to the event Sunday morning.
