Along North Florida Avenue, a cadre of business owners in the past decade have created niche-like local options for residents seeking everything from vintage clothing to craft beer and antiques.
Before some of them considered a business plan, Elizabeth Graham had opened Forever Beautiful Salon & Day Spa near the intersection of Hillsborough and Florida avenues.
The salon, which hosts a wine tasting on the third Friday of every month opened in 2002 after Graham purchased the property in 1999.
We recently talked to Graham, a Temple Terrace resident who rents a home in Seminole Heights, about how she got started in the salon and spa industry, and her thoughts on being a small business owner.
Patch: How did the salon come about?
Graham: In 1990's, they expanded Hillsborough Avenue. When they came into our section, because it was historical, they were going to demolition the buildings, and the commissioners wanted the buildings saved. So they had a one week silent bid, and the (Florida) Department of Transportation had the bid. I made the bid and won the houses. I own this building. You had to submit a moving company and a deed or a title to submit a bid.
Patch: What services do you offer?
Graham: We do coloring, cutting, styling, nails, acrylics, shellacs, massages, facials. I pride myself on being involved. I want to be able to carry the products people want. Paul Mitchell, Clear Choice, Zoya, a nail product.
Patch: What makes this community special compared to others?
Graham: People really care. They are really considerate and supportive. They want to see businesses succeed. If there's an issue, they will tell me. They want to help me. I would highly encourage any business to come to our area.
Patch: What's the hardest part of being a small business owner?
Graham: Trying to invite new people to come in and maintain your current clientele. Build a talented dependable staff. I have six employees. In this industry, everybody comes out of school thinking they're Vidal Sassoon. Training, recruiting and hiring is part of my job description.
