Rename Nebraska? Patch Readers Are Not Impresed

In all, more than 20 readers wrote in with their reaction on the site and on our Facebook Page.

Renaming one the major roads in Seminole Heights is sure to be something that many residents want to weigh in on. After all, it's a pretty big of where we travel in Seminole Heights. 

So, when Patch reported on Tampa City Council member Yvonne Yolie Capin and her desire to rename Nebraska Avenue in honor Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it wasn't surprising that many of you has something to say. However, there was an overwhelming negative reaction to the idea.

In all, more than 20 readers wrote in with their reaction on the site and on our Facebook Page.

While not every post was negative, no one wrote that they were in favor of the idea. 

"Let's rename a street something that is 4 names long, unpronounceable, and that has a bad historical affiliation," wrote Patch user Gillian "I don't think so."

"The association to the proposed new name breeds negative karma," wrote damita. "Also, Seminole Heights small business owners would have use their hard-earned money on re-marketing. Double negative." 

Some readers discussed the argument of the impact of the name change.

"Before anyone says that the cost of changing signs and stationary will stop it, that was the same argument used when Buffalo was switched to MLK," wrote Roy Flood on Facebook.
