7-Year-Old Fatally Shot When 4th Of July At Beach Ends In Gunfire
Tampa police detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a child on the Fourth of July following a dispute that escalated to gunfire.

TAMPA, FL — Tampa police detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old on the Courtney Campbell Causeway Tuesday morning.
According to Tampa Deputy Police Chief Calvin Johnson, just after 8:30 p.m., officers responded to a shooting along the Courtney Campbell Causeway west of Ben T. Davis Beach and found a 7-year-old child with a gunshot wound to his head and the child's grandfather with a gunshot wound to his hand.
According to witnesses, an argument broke out between two groups of people over a jet ski operator who was recklessly riding a jet ski near where children were playing in the water.

The argument escalated when members of each group took out guns and began firing at each other.
During the gunfire, the grandfather attempted to shield his 7-year-old grandson but both were struck. The 7-year-old was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. His grandfather was treated for his gunshot wound to the hand.

Johnson said detectives are still gathering evidence and developing leads. Currently, there is limited information on the description of the shooter but witnesses believe the shooters were Hispanic men.
"Our thoughts are with the family of this innocent child," said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. "Our detectives will work tirelessly until all those involved are identified and arrested."
