Downtown Tampa continues its growth story. My first job was in downtown and it has evolved immensely since I first starting dining out for lunch 20 years ago. There is a mixture of newcomers and classic spots continuing to fuel the area. Here are my recommendations for dining when visiting Tampa’s downtown.

Little Tina: The newest coffee shop and cafe in downtown Tampa with the same ownership as Urban Cantina, a Mexican restaurant nearby. Coffee is made fresh and they also have libations available in a daytime setting. The food is mostly simple breakfast items such as croissant and avocado toast. Most people are lounging and hanging out with friends. I see plenty of potential for this concept. 507 N Tampa St., Tampa, FL 33602.

Eddie & Sam’s NY Style Pizza: One of Tampa’s best pizza shops with reliable service and quality pizza. They have expanded their operations to also include carry-out and delivery through third-party apps. Water is imported from New York to try and replicate the flavor of the dough. There is nothing like a delicious slice on a bad day. 203 E Twiggs St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Anchor & Brine: One of my favorite stops on the Tampa Riverwalk with a great view of the river and Harbour Island at Tampa Marriott Water Street. Anchor & Brine features a full American menu with a variety of shareable apps and entrees. I keep it pretty simple and usually order the burger. They are open fairly late and have friendly staff. 505 Water St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Beacon: The rooftop restaurant and lounge at JW Marriott Tampa Water Street is one of my favorite views of the City of Tampa. I have always wondered why Tampa did not have more viewing points with our Florida sunsets. Although all the libations are excellent, my favorite thing about Beacon is the vibe and ambiance that feels more mature and the excellent food. The menu is creative, exciting, and despite being small plates – always hits the spot. I love the space itself for events or birthday gatherings. Don’t miss the Pomme Pave and the Surf & Turf Dumplings. 510 Water St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Columbia Cafe: The Columbia Cafe located at the Tampa Bay History Center on the Tampa Riverwalk is a long running favorite for my family. The waterfront views cannot be missed, but of course we also love the famous 1905 Salad and the sandwiches on the menu. Don’t skip the sangria either. We have always preferred this location. 801 Water St #1905, Tampa, FL 33602.

Flatbread & Butter: This cafe concept expanded recently from St. Petersburg into Tampa and is already making a splash on the scene, first by introducing espresso tonics into the area and also by slowly rolling out a brunch and upcoming lunch menu. Baristas are friendly and they source from Bandit Coffee in St. Petersburg, which is an interesting choice. I am a fan. 101 W Tyler St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Naked Farmer: If I am looking for something healthy, Naked Farmer is always my first choice. There are a number of healthy bowl concepts in the area, but Naked Farmer just tastes exquisite and sources from local farmers in Florida. One of the best additions to Water Street. 1001 Water St, Tampa, FL 33602.

The Pearl: One of the most popular restaurants in Water Street from the same ownership of Ocean Prime. The Pearl offers a variety of seafood options and also a variety of delicious desserts as well as a well-craft menu for drinks. I love the lounge because it feels very New York and the dining space feels very alive. The House Smoked Salmon is not to be missed. 823 Water St C100, Tampa, FL 33602.

Boulon Brasserie: Certainly one of the most classy restaurants in town. Boulon is a modern take on French and American cuisine. Their brunch is not to be missed and I love the patio dining in the cooler months. Staff is always very friendly and I even love to go sit at the bar and eat if I am flying solo. The price-point means it can only be for special occasions, but its a nice addition to Water Street and downtown Tampa. If you are looking for something simple, I really like their French Onion soup. 1001 Water St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Shortwave Coffee: A modern coffee chain from up north has positioned itself in Sparkman Wharf in Water Street. The pour overs and tea are both pretty good. They sell plenty of coffee equipment and there is spacious seating for those looking to get some work done during the day. It isn’t better the local shops in North Hyde Park or Ybor City, but not a bad choice if you’re in the area. Wi-Fi is free as well. 615 Channelside Dr Suite 106, Tampa, FL 33602.

Si-am Thai American: If you are looking for an old school Thai concept that will satisfy your needs for curry, noodles, or rise, look no further than Si-am. Their Thai Tea is also excellent and they are quick to provide lunch and dinner service right next door to the historic Tampa Theatre. 713 N Franklin St, Tampa, FL 33602.

Malio's Prime Steakhouse: Malio's has survived generations in Tampa and one visit to their restaurant or bar nearby will quickly remind you of why. The staff is friendly and professional. The food is flawlessly executed. The menu for libations will satisfy any palate and is both classic and forward-thinking. If you're looking for something simple, I recommend the Downtown burger. 400 N Ashley Dr, Tampa, FL 33602.
